Index companies by estimated team size (LinkedIn estimates, Sep 2026).REV 26.09 · raised = disclosed equity

Team size is the best public proxy for how many roles a company has open. It is not a hiring signal on its own. A large team can be in a hiring freeze and a 40-person team can be adding a line. Check the careers page, and check the datasheet for the last disclosed round.

Hardware startup jobs: verified careers pages

We checked each link below on 3 October 2026. Every page loaded and is the company's own careers page. Openings change daily, so we link the page, not individual roles.

Not every company is in this table. Some careers pages block automated checks, and we only list links we could load. For any other company, the datasheet links its website, and the careers page is usually one click from the footer.

Where the openings cluster

Hardware hiring follows the hubs. REV 26.09 counts 49 index companies in the SF Bay Area, 19 in Los Angeles, 8 in Boston and 6 in Austin. Outside the US, Bengaluru has 15 and Shenzhen has 8.

Each hub has a character.

  • Los Angeles is mostly aerospace and defense in the index: launch, satellites, drones and the factories that machine their parts.
  • The Bay Area is chips first, then robots, energy and mobility. It is the largest hub in the index by a wide margin.
  • Boston is health devices, energy (including fusion), robotics and fabrication.
  • Austin is a small, mixed hub: robots, launch, defense, energy and chips.

The hardware startups by hub note lists every hub in the index, and defense tech startups covers the defense companies in this table in more detail.

How to judge a hardware startup before you apply

A job at a hardware company carries different risks from a software job. The product needs tooling, inventory and certification before it earns revenue, so the company's cash position matters more. Five checks, all from public data:

  1. Last disclosed round and total raised. On the company datasheet. Ask when the round closed and how many months of runway it bought. No disclosed round means ask harder.
  2. What ships. The datasheet names the product. Is it on sale, in a pilot, or a prototype? Shipping companies hire for manufacturing, test and support. Prototype companies hire for design.
  3. Who invested. Investors are listed on the datasheet. Look them up: some funds back hardware through several rounds, some write one check.
  4. Team trend. The team estimate is a snapshot. Compare it with the company's LinkedIn page over time.
  5. Where the factory is. A company that builds in-house hires manufacturing engineers. A company that uses a contract manufacturer hires supplier quality and NPI engineers.

The roles hardware startups hire for

Job boards file most of these under "engineering", which hides the differences. The titles that recur across index companies' careers pages, grouped by what the person touches:

  • Electrical. Board design, power electronics, RF and antennas, signal integrity. At chip companies, add RTL design, verification and physical design.
  • Mechanical. Enclosures, structures, thermal, actuators and mechanisms. At launch and fusion companies, add propulsion, cryogenics and magnets.
  • Firmware and embedded software. Drivers, bootloaders, motor control, real-time operating systems. This is a common bridge for software engineers moving into hardware.
  • Test. Fixtures, automated test scripts, environmental and reliability testing. Test engineers decide whether a unit leaves the building.
  • Manufacturing and NPI. New product introduction, process engineering, yield, supplier quality. These roles multiply when a company moves from prototype to production.
  • Supply chain and operations. Sourcing, procurement, logistics and inventory. In hardware these are technical jobs, because a single part on allocation can stop a line.
  • Field and deployment. Installation, service and customer engineering for robots, drones and energy systems that run at customer sites.

Non-engineering roles exist too: sales engineers, program managers for government contracts, and regulatory specialists at medical device and aerospace companies. The company's careers page lists them by team.

What hardware startup jobs look like by stage

Early teams, under 50 people, hire generalists. One engineer may own the board, the enclosure and the test fixture. Titles are loose and scope is wide. Every seed-stage company in the index is in this band.

Growth teams, a few hundred people, split into disciplines: electrical, mechanical, firmware, test, manufacturing and supply chain. This is where most hardware startup jobs in the table above sit.

Large private companies, over a thousand people, hire like established manufacturers, with levels, programs and dedicated recruiting teams. Equity is still illiquid, but the company has revenue or a large backlog.

For pay at each stage, see the hardware engineer salary breakdown, and for how rounds are sized, the hardware startup funding note.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I find hardware startup jobs?

Start with the company. Most hardware startups post roles on their own careers page first, then on job boards. This page links verified careers pages for the largest hardware teams in the index. For any other company, open its datasheet in the index, follow the website link and look for a careers or jobs page in the site footer.

Which hardware startups have the most employees?

In the HardwareMap index, team sizes come from LinkedIn estimates gathered in September 2026. The largest private hardware teams include Anduril Industries, Shield AI, Zipline, Saronic and Tenstorrent. The table on this page is sorted by team size and updates when the index does. LinkedIn counts include contractors and people who list the company loosely.

Are robotics startup jobs different from other hardware jobs?

The engineering disciplines overlap: mechanical, electrical, firmware, controls, test and manufacturing. Robotics companies add more weight on actuators, motor control, perception sensors and the software that ties them together. Humanoid and warehouse robot makers in the index hire across all of these. Title names vary, so read the job description rather than the title.

Do I need a security clearance for defense tech jobs?

Some roles need one and many do not at the point of hire. Defense startups often require US citizenship or permanent residency for work under export controls, and sponsor clearances for roles on classified programs. The job posting states the requirement. Check it before applying, since it is a hard filter rather than a preference.

What do hardware startup jobs pay?

Pay varies with stage, city and level. For the benchmark, the US Bureau of Labor Statistics put the median computer hardware engineer wage at $161,740 in May 2025. Startups usually pay part of the package in equity, which is illiquid until a sale or listing. Our hardware engineer salary note breaks the numbers down by level, company type and city.

HardwareMap keeps a datasheet on every company above. Open one, check the stage and the team, then apply. Browse the robotics category to start.
